The phone call that became the business
A few years into roasting, Ralph called from the School of Expressive Arts and Learning (S.E.A.L.) in Lombard with an idea for working together. Nick said yes to all of it and moved the roastery into the school. Today that partnership is the biggest part of Spiritus, and the best story we have to tell.
Employment
A first paid job
Seven team members work for Spiritus today, earning minimum wage and higher. For many of them it is a first paid job, and it is treated with the weight a first job deserves: real schedules, real responsibilities, real paychecks, and a path toward lasting employment beyond our roastery. We are proud of the coffee they help make; we are prouder of the resumes they are building.
Learning
Hands on, at their own pace
Twelve interns learn life skills alongside our team, hands on, one station at a time. Each intern works through a rubric, practicing a skill with support until they are comfortable, then practicing until the equipment feels like theirs. There is no rush and no shortcut; mastery here is measured in confidence, not speed.
The cafe
Where future baristas train
Inside the school is a working cafe where Ralph teaches future baristas the craft: dialing in espresso, steaming milk, greeting a customer, counting change. It is a classroom that smells like fresh coffee, and every drink served is a small graduation.
Fulfillment
The back room ships everything
Every Spiritus order that ships is packed in the back room of the cafe. Our team weighs, seals, labels, and boxes each bag by hand. When your coffee arrives, it has passed through this room and these hands; that is not a detail of our operation, it is the point of it.
