Our Story
Spiritus Coffee was born in Lombard, Illinois in 2021. Not from a business plan, but from a practice.
The Beginning
Founders Jason Holman and Nick Bianco discovered something in their darkest times: coffee became more than a beverage. It became a ritual. An anchor. A daily practice of returning to themselves.
What started as a personal practice became a shared mission. A quiet rebellion against mindless consumption. A way to bring presence, intention, and connection to something most people rush through without thinking.
The Name
/ˈspɪr.ɪ.tʊs/ — Latin
The name references Carl Jung's phrase spiritus contra spiritum, the idea that spirit can be the antidote to chaos, distraction, and the noise that pulls us away from presence. We carry that intention into everything we do.
A Sacred Lineage
The earliest coffee drinkers weren't commuters rushing to meetings. They were Sufi monks in Yemen who used coffee as a tool for spiritual focus during prayer. Coffee was sacred before it was commercial.
In Ethiopia, coffee ceremonies still embody deep community and presence. The ritual of preparation, the sharing of cups, the conversation that follows. We honor this tradition in every batch we roast.
More Than a Roaster
We partner with the S.E.A.L. Adult Transition Program, where students run our distribution operations, building real job skills and real futures. Many go on to become permanent Spiritus employees.
